Greetings, This is my first posting. I read that Samba can run on USS OS/390 but are there tips or tricks that can be shared? I am a AIX systems engineer (13mos) with 13 years experience as a MVS systems guy. Our current release of OS/390 is 2.8 . I already found a lot of information about Samba on OS/390 in the download page and I'm trying to make sense of it. But if there is any information that can be shared I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks...... Joseph Martella AIX OS Engineering Work: (817) 333-5056 Cell: (817) 312-3980 Pager: (817) 824-1867
Hmm, well we're running Linux under VM on our mainframe and it works quite well. I'm not sure if you're referring to operating Samba directly under MVS or on a VM Linux machine. Actually, we have several Linux machines running under VM as guest operating systems on our mainframe. These Linux machines are being tested for a wide variety of service provisions. Under native MVS (OS/390) the environment is so foreign to the Samba design that I have some reservations about attempting service delivery in this way. It isn't just the compiler and library issues, but the authentication mechanisms and a plethora of additional concerns which make me hesitant to attempt to migrate Samba away from an environment for which it was designed. If you haven't attempted to operate Linux on your mainframe, I would suggest you try that before attempting to migrate Samba to this platform. Hope this helps. Greetings, I've found myself looking at a project to move Samba from AIX based to OS/390 based. Where do I start? I assume that I will need to load Linux on the MF. What about the Samba code for the MF? Is it up to date? I'll greatly appreciate any information. Thanks..... Just curious, what is your reason(s) for doing this? Check out DFS on USS running under S/390. I'm assuming 2.0.7 (anything later will already build just fine). 2.0.7 builds fine as shipped, with one patch. It allows configure to properly detect the type of machine/os. It can be found at: http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/linux/patches/samba/s390-build-patch.2_0_7.gz Jim ---------------------------- Jim McDonough Linux Technology Center IBM Boulder Notes: Jim McDonough/Boulder/IBM @ IBMUS VNET: JMCD at IBMUSM54 Internet: jmcd@us.ibm.com Phone: (303) 924-5822 T/L: 263-5822
