Greetings lists, I have one samba server on a network, running linux kernel 2.2.18 and samba 2.0.3 This server shares it's cdrom and a printer to a workgroup called IT. There are five win95 machines successfully printing and using the cdrom with no problems. I have two machines that cannot see the samba server at all, both running win95. All machines are identical in hardware and installed with the same image using DriveImage, so configurations are 100% identical. On all machines, there is no browse list for the workgroup, but they still connect fine using the UNC \\machine\share and \\machine\printer except on these two machines where I get "The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again." - The friendly Windows error message. Nothing in the log files on the Samba server appear for these attempts. I have tried installing Netbui on the affected machines, and I have enabled netbios via tcp on them as well. On of the machines is on the same hub as the samba server too. I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot from here, any thoughts are appreciated!! TIA DS
Hi again, One more thing I noticed: When doing an "nbtstat -a <netbios-name>" the machines in question can resolve the name, but the mac address of the server shows as: MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00 and a nbtstat -c shows the name as registered, yet a find computer search dosen't find the computer. Thanks again, DS On Fri, 15 Dec 2000 dschaible@obiwan.balmar.com wrote:> Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 13:52:02 -0500 > From: dschaible@obiwan.balmar.com > To: samba@us5.samba.org > Subject: win95 machine not seeing samba server > > Greetings lists, > > I have one samba server on a network, running linux kernel 2.2.18 and > samba 2.0.3 This server shares it's cdrom and a printer to a workgroup > called IT. Are you sure your hardware is working correctly? Network adapter, cables etc? This is what could be different to other machines even if you use the same image to install. The first try should be to ping the server from the Windows 95 machines in question. If this is successful, share a folder on the Windows 95 machine and try to access it from the server (smbclient //windows95/share). If this is successful too, try to get a server-share from the Windows 95 using IP-address instead of computer name. If this works, write a host file for the windows 95 machine. If all of the above does not work, I don't know what to do. Best regards, Dieter PS: do you use static IP's or not?
