according to what I know, rpm package manager does not recognize the new
installation if it is done from source etc. One way is to make backup
copies of /etc/rc.d/smb and links to that (depending on your linux version)
as well as a backup of /etc/smb.conf (or wherever that is).
Then uninstall the old Samba-Version with rpm, put the backup copies back
and change the paths in them accordingly. I have installed Samba from
source and it went to /usr/local/samba, precompiled path to smb.conf was
/usr/local/samba/lib/.
When finished with the above, just enter
/etc/rc.d/smb start
and enjoy!
