Hi, Could you suggest me a third party software that would help unix users see the resources on an NT/95 machine just as samba let's you see the unix resources on the NT/95 machines? The software should help to run the Microsoft Office files like the word, excel on unix.Is there anything like that. Thanks Madhu Murty
Well, to open files like that you could use StarOffice (http://www.sun.com/products/staroffice/), for example. Or you could use an emulator like WINE (http://www.winehq.com/) to run programs like Word directly (never tried myself tho, I've used StarOffice when needed. SAMBA has a client to access windows shares, so you can read/copy your files from the windows machine. regards, Ariel Arjona> -----Original Message----- > From: Madhu Murty.M.V. You didn't mention what OS you are running on your UNIX system. Linux supports smbfs which allows you to mount windows file systems. Samba supports a feature called smbsh (smbwrappers) on some systems that allow dynamically linked programs to access windows file systems by refering to them as /smb/<machine>/<share>/file (check out the smbsh man page for the limitations and how to use). Finally you could use a product called sharity that allows you to mount windows file systems on UNIX systems that don't support smbfs (anything but Linux). http://www.obdev.at/Products/Sharity.html -- =====================================================================Herb Lewis Silicon Graphics Networking Engineer 1600 Amphitheatre Pkwy MS-510 Strategic Software Organization Mountain View, CA 94043-1351 herb@sgi.com Tel: 650-933-2177 http://www.sgi.com Fax: 650-932-2177 ======================================================================
Virtual Network Computing is the only thing that I know of. It isn't nearly as nice as Reflection X for Windows Users. However, if you have a fast LAN connection it should do the trick with a decent size monitor. http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ -ryu> Hi, > Could you suggest me a third party software that would help unix > users see the resources on an NT/95 machine just as samba let's you see > the unix resources on the NT/95 machines? The software should help to run > the Microsoft Office files like the word, excel on unix.Is there > anything like that. > Thanks > > Madhu Murty > >
VMWare allows you to run Linux virtual machines on your W2K/NT desktop, and W2K/NT/95/98 virtual machines on your linux box, fully networked, full GUI support, etc. We use it here for testing installs and it works great. -----Original Message----- From: Ryan Detert [mailto:rcdetert@ucdavis.edu] Sent: Thursday, November 16, 2000 10:06 PM To: Madhu Murty.M.V.
