Hello! There is a problem with samba (tested: 2.0.5 6 and pre7) tested on Linux RH 5.2 RH6.0 and FreeBSD 3.3 and 3.4 (all the same result!) The problem is a group of programs written in Clarion ( still in active development, and working on different 1000000+ PC in many network/single configurations). This is some kind of financial/management software for small bussines. Databases are about 500K ..xxM size with about 20 files and 30 indexes (in seperate files). The nightmare is: the problem DOES NOT EXIST on any novel (3.x 4.x 5.x) and NT4 - whats worse - even Win98 can do it better than samba. Typical setup is, that one machine has whole program nad data and share the path to the net, where all machines map it to some drive and use as local. Problem description: When two or more clients try to read simultanously database (e.g. in searching for all records) it looks like "task switching": when one station is searching, other is waiting. In few seconds(5..15) first stops and other starts. With more clients , results are worse, but not lineary! It looks like that client software don't get "approve" for some action from samba. Client OS were: win95, win95OSR, msdosclient - all tested in different cfgs. Looks like a samba bug/feature because with the same client base, changing server to novell/NT/win9x(!) helped ot once. I tried ***many*** settings in smb.conf, even as weird as oplock contention limit (and many many more) but WITH NO RESULTS. Any help appreciated!!! It looks to me as some kind of record locking problem, but dunno more. -- radoslaw.stachowiak.................................................[ALTERsc]
