I tried and failed to get a W98 box to connect via ppp and become part of the network. In the course of debugging this I found what appears to be a weakness in the "interfaces" handling. Testing with : nmblookup -d 2 '*' and using different "interfaces" lines. The inbound ppp connection is 192.168.3.x. 1. interfaces = 200.01.01.233/29 192.168.3.1/24 added interface ip=200.01.01.233 bcast=200.01.01.239 nmask=255.255.255.248 added interface ip=192.168.3.1 bcast=192.168.3.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 querying * on 200.01.01.239 Note - no broadcast on ppp0 2. interfaces = 192.168.3.1/24 200.01.01.233/29 added interface ip=192.168.3.1 bcast=192.168.3.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 added interface ip=200.01.01.233 bcast=200.01.01.239 nmask=255.255.255.248 querying * on 192.168.3.255 Note - no broadcast on eth0 3. interfaces = eth0 ppp0 127.0.0.0/8 added interface ip=200.01.01.233 bcast=200.01.01.239 nmask=255.255.255.248 added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0 querying * on 200.01.01.239 note - no broadcast on ppp0 or on lo 4. (no "interfaces" specified, but eth0 and ppp0 active) added interface ip=200.01.01.233 bcast=200.01.01.239 nmask=255.255.255.248 querying * on 200.01.01.239 note - no broadcast on ppp0 So I did not get my ppp client working. Any pointers anywhere on how to do this? I have included the above in the hope that it will be helpful. Would somebody please reiterate the problem with sticky bits and/or force mode settings in samba 2.0.6 (on solaris)? I searched the archive at the samba site. I got hits, but I got file not found errors when I tried to view the messages. Thanks. Jean -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I am thinking of setting up Samba as a PDC in order to simplify administration. I have Win95's, Win98's, and a few WinNT workstations. In reading comments in "Using Samba" from O'Reilly, they say "You will need to use at least Samba 2.1 to ensure that PDC functionality for Windows NT clients is present. Prior to Samba 2.1, only limited user authentication for NT clients was present" Do you concur? If so, how long before these features are in the stable release. If you disagree, what version should I be using? Currently I have 2.06.
