I will certainly let you know of anything I discover. For your problem, could you not simply remove the share in Samba, then re add it. This would require that the computers (Win98) are not connected, then make the change, and restart Samba. My problem is a little different in that I can not log in as the same user on two different machines. Logging in on the original workstation works, but if I try it as the same user on computer #2, that user is denied access to the Linux shares. If I logout on the original machine, the second computer still does not see the shares. If I logon the second computer as someone else, all is fine. Steven Scott Solution Consultants Inc. Sorry for the lack of line wraps. I tend to use a long line on my monitor with its font to allow me to read a long message without the line wraps, and the majority of people who receive my email, there client software performs the wrapping for them. What is the username map? My largest problem is that it works from all the machines, but the desktop unit can not share the login name of the notebook. The notebook though can connect as the desktop without a problem. Steven Scott Solution Consultants Inc. I have corrected the problem with my Samba configuration. Thanks to all who helped and made suggestions to correct my problems. For those who are interested in the ultimate solution to my sharing a login problem, I corrected the problem with the following solution: Remove the .PWL files from ALL Windows 98 stations and shutdown the computers. Remove the problem login from the Linux server and reboot the server. Add the login back to Linux, but with a different UID (did not try the same UID as this corrected the problem). Start the desktop computer which had the problem with the logon in the first place, set the password in Windows 98 the same as Linux. Log the desktop computer in and map the drives/printers. Start the notebook computer and login as the same user on the desktop and confirm the Windows 98 password. Steven Scott Solution Consultants Inc. Dear Samba team, We are a group of newbies trying to fix up the netwok system in our college. The network was a Red Hat Linux based system serving over 100 PCs (Windows NT workstations.) We upgraded the system to FreeBSD and everything went well. The problem we are facing is that there is another server (Red Hat Linux 6.0) that served about 12 PCs (Win 98). The system was configured so that users and group of users (eg. finance, admin, teacher) can save their files in the server. We backed up the files and built a new server (FreeBSD), put the files back. THe 12 Win 98 Pcs are now NT 4.0. Now, users can't save their Microsoft Excel files in the server anymore. Any attempt to save, the file name will be changed into something like 950002 or fc56200. Users can't delete a file in the server. Deleting a file and clicking refresh, the file will show up again with 0 kb size. Users using Microsoft Word can only see 1 (one) font, times new roman, one font size. Existing Win 98 PCs do not have that problem. What did we overlook? The new smb.conf file is very similar to the old one Thank you for your attention Yance Kowara yance@froggy.com.au -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
Hello: I want to connect two Microsoft networks in the middle with a linux that gives access me to the network. It is possible configure samba to be able to see the computers of the other network. A network has IP 192.168.1.0 and the other 161.111.226.0. Second net provides access to Internet.
I am new to Linux and Samba and would appreciate some help in getting it running: I can see the server in the network neighborhood window but when I click on it I get the following: "\\Server is not accessible, The network path was not found" I can do an nmblookup from the Linux box and get back IP addresses of other machines on the network. For the server itself, it fails to find its own name with "name query failed to find name server" I have put the name in both the hosts and lmhosts file. I have a WINS server and can ping IP addresses. Any suggestion would be appreciated. BTW in the smbd.log has this to say: [2002/02/13 14:04:36, 0] passdb/secrets.c:secrets_init(47) Failed to open etc/samba/secrets.tdb Here is the smb.conf file # Samba config file created using SWAT # from Lserver (127.0.0.1) # Date: 2002/02/08 15:33:39 # Global parameters [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP netbios name = SERVER server string = Linux_Server #interfaces = 192.0.0.199/24 (tried with&without #) #interfaces = 127.0.0.1 (tried with&without #) encrypt passwords = Yes security = user #smb passwd file = etc/samba/smbpasswd log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log max log size = 10 socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 preferred master = False local master = No domain master = False dns proxy = No wins server = 192.0.0.181 name resolve order = hosts (tried WINS, LMHOSTS) hosts allow = 192.0.0.199/24 192.0.0. 127.0.0.1 printing = lprng preserve case = No short preserve case = No [Root] --snip-- -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
I have installed Red Hat Linux and then installed Samba. I about 20 client pc set up with various versions of windows from 98 to xp. The problem I have is this. I can see Linux server called "SERVER" but when I try to access it, it tells me it can't find it. I'm sure I have the shares set up correctly. If I ping the machine with it's ip number ie PING 192.168.1.254 I get a response. However if I ping using the netbios name ie PING SERVER it comes back and tells me it cannot find host name SERVER. I believe this is why I can not connect to the samba server, and this may be more of a windows networking problem than a samba problem. But any help would be appreciated.
