samba - Jan 1999 - unable to connect to samba server using NT authentication server

hi hi, we tried the DOMAIN_MEMBER.txt instructions for making our
SAMBA server a domain member, however, it's not working. Here's the
logfile output. The config file looks just like the docs suggest, all
the steps indicated success.
btw,  (we have no smbpasswd file on the samba server, since we want to
use NT authentication).. are we missing something? Any ideas
