More information on the problem. A couple of days ago I posted a request for help for this error msg terre{testgb}73: smbpasswd Old SMB password: New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: /opt/samba/bin/smbpasswd: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the session setup. Error was : ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.). This happens only for new users. My "adduser" script adds a line in the smbpasswd with a password field filled with 'X'. When the new user comes to get is account he would type smbpasswd and hit ENTER for "Old SMB password:" This doesn't seem to work anymore. From the rrot account it is possible to put a password though with "smbpasswd username". That works. Once the user has a password he is able to use smbpasswd to change it from now on. This behavior has happened after upgrading from 1.9.18p3 to 1.9.18p4. Thank you for your time. -- ===================================================Gaetan Boudreau, ing/P.Eng. There is an inconsistancy with the documentation. The man pages of smbpasswd says null passwords = true and the man pages of smb.conf says null passwords = yes Maybe both are accepted. Anyway neither of them works for me. The users cannot put a password if it is blank, that is either filled with X or the string NO PASSWORD in the password field of the smbpassword file. They get this error message: terre{testgb}73: smbpasswd Old SMB password: New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: /opt/samba/bin/smbpasswd: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the session setup. Error was : ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.). The solution I am looking for is either 1) the new user be able to use smbpasswd even if he has a blank password. OR 2) be able to put a default password in my custom "adduser" script. If I use "smbpasswd -a new_user", I will have to type it interactively on the screen, which I don't want. Right now I just append the appropriate line myself at the end of the smbpasswd file I need to add hundreds of account. How do you do it ? Thank you for your time. -- ===================================================Gaetan Boudreau, ing/P.Eng. > It has nothing to do with initial null passwordsThank you for taking time in trying to help me. I find it hard to search for solutions in the archive the way it is structured. -- ===================================================Gaetan Boudreau, ing/P.Eng. I think: smbpasswd works only for users who are in the passwordfile of samba. If you want smbpasswd to work, add a line for this user to the smbpasswd file (with all XX's in itt). -- Franky Van Liedekerke, BSC System Support Webmaster Dep.: VA94 Tel.: (32)3/450 3277 Fax : (32)3/450 3558 mailto:liedekef@mcd.alcatel.be
