Hi Wolfgang,
I don't know your setup so there is no way I can be sure, but I'd
venture
a guess that you have "password level = x" set in your smb.conf file.
We
use that option here to deal with the fact that OSR2 uppercases all
cleartext passwords and we get these PAM authentication failures all the
time as Samba calls PAM each time as it tries a different case
combination until it gets the right one.
It looks like something else may be happening too because of the first
line in your log file about "pwdb: structure no longer valid", but
I'm
not a PAM expert (or anythign close) so I can't really comment on it. The
only reason I mention it is that we don't see that line. Perhaps ask on
the PAM list.
