Hi I would like some tips on how to connect a Linux Box running samba to a Shared printer (Lexmark OprtaR+) on a Win NT machine. I dont know much about /etc/printcap configurations and the like. I have tried to print with the command: smbclient \\\\WindozeNT\\printer -N -P smb: \> put <filename> Its prints but not in any kind of proper format(ie Lanscape and diagonal printing, text runs off the side etc etc). I have also tried to use smbprint but i dont know it works with /etc/printcap. Any kind of help would be appreciated preferably if someone could show me their /etc/printcap setup. thanks in advance td
Hi All you Samba people. I would like to use Samba for sharing my unix printers, and only that - NO SHARES. I think the easy way to do this, is to have the same unix account do all the printing, so I have made an account call PCPRINT, with no password. My problem: If I don't put a "+" into /etc/hosts.equiv the pcprint user won't connect to the printer, instead my own account is used, and the password for my account cannot be validated. ; SECURITY alternate permissions = no security = server protocol = NT1 password level = 0 password server = wacs1 encrypt passwords = no create mask = 0755 guest account = pcprint null passwords = yes hosts equiv = /etc/hosts.equiv The Printer entry: ; PRINTING lpq cache time = 10 printing = hpux printcap name = /usr/local/samba/lib/printcap load printers = yes print command = /usr/bin/lp -d %p %s lppause command = /usr/bin/lpalt %p-%j -p0 lpresume command = /usr/bin/lpalt %p-%j -p2 lpq command = /usr/bin/lpstat %p lprm command = /usr/bin/cancel %p-%j ;The printer "share" [printers] comment = All Printers browseable = no printable = yes public = yes guest ok = yes guest only = yes guest account = pcprint writable = no create mode = 0700 path = /tmp Should it not be possible to have printing work as one user, without putting a "+" into /etc/hosts.equiv? Hi, we have a Linux pc running samba, with the following configuration: [colordj] path=/var/spool/lpd/colordj read only=yes public=no printable=yes printer=colordj However, we cannot print from any win95 pc using this. Hi, I have successfully set-up Samba on Solaris so I can view my files from NT. However, I have failed in my attempts at printing from Solaris to the HP6 printer connected up to NT. Could someone send me some sample files? and remind me of anything that I need to do? Cheers Chris -----
When printing to a win nt machine from unix, how do I stop the win box from popping up a message? Do I turn prompting off? ed

Greetings, The problem I am having involves a printer attatched to my Windows NT server and therefore it is not local to my Samba server. What I am wondering is how do I get Samba to recognize a network printer? Tyrell Kumlin <tyrell@ciphersys.com> Assistant Help Desk (403) 256-8877 Ext. 239 Cipher Systems Ltd. Can anyone help... Further to my earlier request, on checking the logs - when Samba starts up it's looking for a null printer name in /etc/printcap. I only have 2 printers in there, both network printers that I can print to from Gnome or from the command line, both use the IP address in the rm statement, and both exist in the host file. Both were set up using the print tool in gnome, and work fine. Can anyone help me? Also - can you install Windows2000 and dual-boot Linux? I also need to connect a Windows2000 laptop to our Linux fileserver. Are there any quirks I should look out for? Does it differ a lot from NT4 on that score? I have samba setup with a print share. The printer is a network printer and I have the printcap setup correctly and all prints fine, except at odd times it printers a blank page before or after the print job(can't remember which). I've tried changing the spooling formats and what not, but that doesn't seem to affect it. I'm running 2.0.7 and lpr doesn't seem to reproduct this error although I don't print that much with it, so it might be freebsd-4.2 and not samba. any help would be appreciated.
Hi David, I am experiencing this same problem. I have 2 OKIDATA OL 1200 printers setup on 2 different linux boxes. One is a local printer and one is connected to a print server. Box 1 is the local printer which prints a blank page after every print job. Box 2 does not print a blank page. I print to both using the same driver, HP Laserjet 4. I also changed Box 1 to use load printers = yes and it still printed a blank page after the print job. Maybe somebody will see where the page is coming from. ====Box 1 ==== /etc/printcap ------------- OKIDATA:sd=/var/spool/lpd/OKIDATA:mx#0:sh:lp=/dev/lp0: /etc/smb.conf ------------- printcap name = /etc/printcap #load printers = yes [OKIDATA] path = /var/spool/samba comment = In Development Room postscript = no printable = yes writeable = no create mask = 0700 browseable = yes guest ok = no directory mask = 0700 write list printer = OKIDATA [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no guest ok = no writable = no printable = yes ====BOX 2 ==== printcap -------- Okidata:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:mx#0:sh:rm=np559775:rp=raw1: smb.conf -------- printcap name = /etc/printcap load printers = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no guest ok = no writable = no printable = yes> -----Original Message----- > From: David W. Have a look at chapter 7 section 7.1.5 in the copy of Using Samba that came with your distribution (I hope!), or oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch07_01.html Basically you need to create a dummy printer, have the win2k machine send a job to it, and see what it did by making the print command report it's actions to you, as shown in the book. Hi guys, Our printer server has been up for the past 2 years and we haven't had one problem. I'm running samba 2.2.7 with lprng. I wanted to make the printer installation on windoz 2000 boxes easier by putting the printer drivers on the server and using the [print$] share. I had it all working nicely and u could just click on a printer on the print sever and it would install along with the drivers. However when another user logs on to the same machine they do not see the printer. We are using profiles here, and my first thought was it could be saving it in my profile. However if I or another one of my collegues logon (Domain Admins) they can see the printer but no one else can (normal users). Any suggestions??? Greetings, I have a locally attached printer on my Windows 2000 computer that I want to give the Solaris servers access to. On the linux side, I have no problems through using printtool, and I can setup my printer from Linux as a Windows SMB printer. Is there a way through Samba that I can get the solaris servers to print to my locally attached printer?
