I have finally managed to compile and install samba 1.9.7alpha5 with
des, shadow passwords and PAM.

I have a new problem now.

my 95 clients when set to user level access control and try sharing
something give this error.
"You cannot view a list of users at this time. Please try again
later."

I belive this is because the rights on the file smbpasswd [the file
containing the passwords] are -rw------- and no matter how I try,
whenever I change the rights on this file , the rights get changed back.
When a user logs on, requests the file or a new user is added.
Might this be a bug, or just me?
Anyway is there anymethod of setting permissions to be fixed so no one
can change them, or is there a file that controls the rights on this
file and if so how do i change it?

the smbclient executible file is suposed to be set with -r-sr-xr-x, what
sequence it chmod would you use to achive this? user root group root.

Hi
	When I use smbpasswd to change a password consisting of all X's, (ie
pressing return when asked for Old smbpasswd) it gives me an error of :

/usr/solaris/samba/source/smbpasswd: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the
session setup. Error was : ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password -
name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.).

	It works OK if used to change an existing password entry.

	Also, if I use smbpasswd to add a machine whose entry is in
/etc/passwd, I get the message :

getsmbfilepwent: malformed password entry (uid not number)
/usr/solaris/samba/source/smbpasswd: Added user pctemp$.

but it does add a (presumably correct) entry to private/smbpasswd :

pctemp$:60002:8A13AA69A36AE7F0AAD3B435B51404EE:456DE8544748F7B8DA3947DCA65ADE78:[W]:LCT-3598A841:

	Also, does it matter which case the machine names are in ?

	I just downloaded the new head branch today (1.9.19-prealpha) and am
running on Solaris 2.5.1

smbpasswd

I am trying to incorporate encrypted passwords into our server. I 
haven't enabled encryption as yet, because I wanted to check to ensure 
the users could change their passwords via smbpasswd. However, I keep 
getting the following error message when I try to change the password 
on the server...

$ smbpasswd -D 3
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Connecting to 127.0.0.1 at port 139
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : The specified
password is invalid.
Failed to change password for user

I have the following set in my smb.conf...

        update encrypted = Yes
        smb passwd file = /path-to-smbpasswd/smbpasswd
        passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
        passwd chat = *current*password* %o\n *ew*password* %n\n *ew*password*
%n\n *success*
        passwd chat debug = Yes
        password level = 1
        unix password sync = Yes

I am basing the passwd chat on the dialog from a regular passwd session...

$ passwd
Changing password for user
(current) UNIX password: 
New UNIX password: 
Retype new UNIX password: 
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully

I also tried changing the user's password as root, which gave all indication
that it was successful, but did not change the password.

I am doing anything wrong?

i have a samba server and i have to add a lot of accounts to the smbpasswd file,
is there any program/script that converts the /etc/passwd file to a smbpasswd
file?
including passwords?

how do i add samba to my domain for windows 2000 server which is a DC?

smbpasswd -j DOM -r PDC??

isn't this only for winnt 4.0..??

my domain name for win2k server is digitalconsiousness.com and my FQDN is
digicon.digitalconsciousness.com

how would i use smbpasswd to join the domain ??

tell me what i want.

add users to smbusers via /etc/samba/smbuser (edit the file) then 
add password to smbpasswd /etc/samba/smbpasswd -a <username>

Hi mjs,
If the table you show is from nbtstat -n  on your win2k domain controller,
then digicon would be your domain controller name and DIGITALCONSCIOU would 
be the domain name; so the smbpasswd command to join your samba server would
be

smbpasswd -j digitalconsciou -r digicon

as you suspected.

in your smb.conf file you should have in the global section:
netbios name = (whatever you named your samba server)
security = domain
encrypt passwords = yes
workgroup = digitalconsciou
password server = *  or digicon


When you add the computer account to the win2k domain, of course use
whatever name
your smb.conf "netbios name=" parameter specifies.

Another thing that is important is when you add the computer account to the
win2k domain,
that you make SURE you check the box that says "Allow pre-Windows 2000
computers to use this account"
You might want to go back into the microsoft management console and remove
the computer account you created and recreate it, and try again.

I have installed 3 servers with Linux kernel 2.2.14 and Samba 2.0.7.
All three look like identical (excluding hardware). But when I call
smbpasswd, two amswer Ok and third tells "Password invalid" for ALL
new passwords. Please help: what is it or where to find answer what
to do.

How do i use smbpasswd to change the password of a user on a NT domain without 
the OLD password? (As administrator). Or, if that's not possible, is there 
another way?

   I want to start to use encryption passwd (now I use plain password). But I
have 200 users in /etc/passwd at my server and I do not want to change passwd
for every user. Is there any way to create file /etc/smbpasswd from file
/etc/passwd except the users have to change their smbpasswd by theirself. If
not, most of my users logon to the server only over samba or they only mount
disk over samba server. How can I change their smbpasswd when they can not use
another way to connect at my server only over samba protokol? Exist any samba
client for platform Windows to remote connect to Samba server? Can you advice me
best way to create file /etc/smbpasswd?

Hallo,
  I want to set some security level at my samba server. In the documentation I
found out that It set in section [global]. Is it possible to set it in my own
section? For example for section [xxx] I want to set security=share and for
section [yyy] I want to set  security=server. Is it possible?

[Samba] smbpasswd

Whenever I try to run smbpasswd I get the following error:

root:0:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:[U: 
command not found

I generated the file as per the instructions at 
http://ca.samba.org/samba/docs/ENCRYPTION.html

I'm not sure what it is that is going wrong.

The first few lines of my smbpasswd file look like this...

Try redirecting the output  ie:  smbpasswd username >/dev/null 2>/dev/null
BUT before you send it to /dev/null I'd suggest sending it first to a file
(like /tmp/smbmsg) to verify it doesnt have errors!

New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
User liuf does not exist in system password file (usually /etc/passwd). Cannot
add account without a valid local system user.
Failed to modify password entry for user liuf

any ideas why the error?

I'm new in SMB and Linux in gerneral, I've tried to set up samba; 
I created a new user in Linux using useradd, after that I wanted to create the
same user for samba using "smbpasswd -a -e username"
but I get an error saying "unable to open passdb database ERROR: Unable to
lacate username in passdb!"
