Pardon my ignore on this topic if it''s been discussed before but how do
I get mod_jserv (Java servlet support for Apache) working with RedHat''s
secure service. I have v2.0 purchased in 1998. I saw several posts in
12/98 indicating a contrib might do the trick but haven''t seen or heard
anything since. A list of steps to take to get this working would be
most appreciated.

Install secureweb-devel, and configure mod_jserv as a DSO. Instructions
come in the package. If you run into problems with some of the apache
headers demanding ssl.h, please edit the #include out of the relevant
header file and recompile. This is an oversight on our part, but it is
easily tweaked and will not affect the final resulting shared object.

Yes, it depends.
What I''d really like to see is you get rid of the dso crap, or at least
give us the option of compiling modules
statically. You can''t tell me this cannot be done because of RSA.
Stronghold, based upon Apache, allows you to compile
in modules statically, why can''t Red Hat.
I''d also prefer that it installs more like regular Apache so that I can
install and upgrade to newer modules without
having to wait for redhat to come out with new rpm''s. In particular,
I had much difficulty getting mod_perl installed
with a version of perl other than redhat''s. I finally gave up and
downgraded to redhats perl version in order to get it
to work.

Hello,
I''ve been working for days trying to get persistent db connections
working in mod_perl. I originally configured my
secure server exactly like a Stronghold server running mod_perl, but the
database connections do not stay persistent.
I''m wondering if it has anything to do with DSO and
PERL_STACKED_HANDLERS. In looking thru the source, I came across
something that implied you cannot use PERL_STACKED_HANDLERS with DSO. Does
anyone know if this is true?
PERL_STACKED_HANDLERS gets disabled in the rpm build, even though EVERYTHING=1
in the spec file. I tried enabling it,
but persistent db connections still don''t work.

We have seen some problems with stacked handlers, so we have disabled them
in the default build. Things may have improved in the latest mod_perl
iterations.
I suggest that you ask this question about persistent db connections on
the mod_perl list.

The current secure web server is specific to Red Hat 5.2 and earlier.
While most components will work on 6.0, some (i.e. the perl-related
portions) will have troubles. We will be coming out with an integrated
Red Hat / Secure Web Server product in the next month or so; please stay
tuned.

The reason that some people might have problems with Secure Web Server on
6.0 is that the mod_perl and other perl utilities are compiled against
perl 5.004, while 6.0 ships with perl 5.005. Unfortunately, perl uses
some very version-specific directories under /usr/lib/perl5 which have now
changed. Thus the paths are now incorrect in these perl packages
(mod_perl, Apache-ASP, etc.).
You could rebuild these packages from the .src.rpms and you would be OK.
The Secure Web Server itself has no issues with 6.0, we have tested this
and it performs as expected.
The new server is based on the latest mod_ssl with our RSA BSAFE
extensions applied, and apache 1.3.6. mod_ssl will be compiled as a DSO
so that Apache may be recompiled _IF_ the EAPI extension patch is applied
as well (the crypto hooks are not included in stock apache, and mod_ssl
needs crypto hooks to function). This should alleviate some of the
complaint mail I receive. :) The reason we didn''t do this in the past
was
primarily because mod_ssl couldn''t be compiled as a DSO in the Secure
Web
Server 2.0 timeframe.
If you do recompile apache, please be aware that support may no longer be
willing to assist you with any issues that you have. I haven''t
discussed
it in detail but I think they may only wish to support the out-of-box
configuration at the basic level of support. There are just too many ways
a person can screw up their server by recompiling and/or directly
including third party modules into the code.
In addition to the SSL upgrades outlined above, Secure Web Server will
ship with the entire Red Hat Linux 6.0 distribution and manuals. On top
of that, there are a bunch of other goodies that we are including this

about
upgrades and such, I''m just a programmer. :) Maybe our marketing and
sales people have something to say along those lines for existing
customers.
