If it doesn''t does anyone know of a place where I can get one.

The secure server does not come with a cert. This must be purchased seperately.
I go with Thawte, though there are a variety of companies to choose from.

I would like to be able to issue my own certificates.
MS NT server comes with a certificate server that I can use, but it would be
nice to be able to use a linux based solution.

You can create your own certificate with the software that comes with
the secure server package.
I assumed you needed a cert form a registered source.

Indeed. The less NT the better.

Can one recompile the apache server and still have SSL in it? I am unfamilar
with how the modules work with apache. So is it just a seperate object module
that I can bind or have dynamicaly loaded when the server starts? So can I
compile Apache 1.3.3 sources from www.apache.org and take the SSL module from
Redhat Secure Server and now have a 128-bit SSL server?
Thanks for the information,
Robert

It is not possible to recompile the apache server, because we are not
permitted to ship the cryptographic source code and the source code is
needed to compile the server. We aren''t allowed to ship it as a
separate,
dynamically loadable object.
We will soon have an update package available which will be based on
Apache 1.3.3, upgrading from Apache 1.3.1.

No. The version number will not change, either. No new features are being
added, it will simply be an incremental bugfix release.

While on the subject of adding things to an httpsd..
I needed JServ (servlet) support in an httpd awhile back and I had to recompile
to get it. Do I need to recompile to add JServ support to a RedHat Secure
Server?
Could this be done without recompiling?

Can JServ be compiled as a DSO? No new features are ever going to be
added to Secure Web Server 2.0, bugfixes only. So if you want this JServ
module, you will have to be able to compile it as a DSO.

I went through the documentation on apache.org as well as what I had from when I
built
Apache with jserv0.9.11 and I don''t see anything in there about loading
it as a DSO.
The only thing in the INSTALL and README with that talks about copying
mod_jserv.c
to the proper directory, putting in the AddModule line and recompiling.
I guess I''m out of luck on this one :/

Maybe if you''re good and patient, I''ll take a look at building
it and
sticking it in contrib, and maybe include it in the next major SWS
release.

I have been trying to compile the fastcgi module as a DSO using the
"apxs" script. However, in the buff.h in /usr/include/apache there is
a
statement:
#ifdef mod_ssl
#include <ssl.h>
#endif
which causes "apxs -c mod_fastcgi.c" to fail.
I have installed both the secureweb source and secureweb development,
but there is no ssl.h file anywhere on my system. How do we compile a
module with DSO?

yes. This was a bug in the secureweb-devel package, which will be fixed
as part of the upcoming bugfix release. For now, remove this from the
buff.h file, and edit out the ssl stuff from /usr/sbin/apxs as well.
We apologize for this oversight.

Thanks for the extremely quick reply. I figure it was about 5 minutes
<g>.
This won''t effect the operation of any DSO modules simply removing
these
lines?

Well, I guess I still have a lot to learn. I just ran it but now when I
do an httpsd restart I get an error on the fastcgi module in the
httpd.conf for "Undefined Symbol: BufferPeekExpand".

Sorry if this question was already covered....
How can I get httpd to startup without prompting for the password on the

I see the part in the manual about how to do so at key creation time by
omitting the -des3 option, but now that I already have a key & certificate
with the -des3 option, can i pass the password to httpsd in the init levels?

Has anyone successfully build the mod_fastcgi module using apxs?
I''ve removed the mod_ssl references from /usr/include/apache/buff.h so
the build doesn''t crash, but whenever I install the module and do an
httpsd restart, I get an error for "mod_fastcgi.so: undefined symbol:
BufferSeekExpand".
I have yet to find any real good documentation on building modules using
the secure server header files, but from what I can tell from the man
pages, all I should have to do is run "apxs -i -a -c mod_fastcgi.c". I
then have had to manually edit the httpd.conf file because apxs sets the
module path to lib/apache/mod_fastcgi.so instead of
"modules/mod_fastcgi.so".
On another note: Any idea when the secure server with suexec will be
released? I really need to get this installed so I can upgrade my old RH
4.2 server.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what I have done
wrong in setting up the security virtual server. When I connect using IE
or Netscape to the webserver it works fine at port 80 but I get an
"unexpected response" from the server when I connect to port 443. And
this is what shows up in error_log-ssl:
[Wed Dec 9 03:15:06 1998] [error] mod_ssl: SSL_accept failed
[Wed Dec 9 03:15:06 1998] [error] SSLeay: error:1407609B:SSL
routines:SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:http request
I have done a search all over the place and cannot find this error
message anywhere.. I only find one for SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:unknown
protocol. What am I doing wrong here? I created a key with ''make
genkey''
and created a test cert with ''make testcert''. Everything
looks good. but
when I connect I get the above error. I went a commented out the security
in the httpd.conf changing SSLEnable to SSLDisable etc... and I can get
the first page via port 443. But when I set it back I cannot pull up the
page.
A possible related problem. If I stop and start the httpd server. The
very first time I connect to port 80 It will load the page but then hang
on loading a few of the pictures... if I hit stop and then reload... it
all works fine from then on. ( I have also notice intermiten hangs with
VNC over my ethernet.)
This is what is in my error_log (I have loglevel set to debug in
httpd.conf):
[Wed Dec 9 03:14:06 1998] ssl_gcache started

Any help would be appreciated! I am running out of hair.

Okay, I downloaded the SSLeay source and started looking at it. I believe
my error is being printed out at line 321 in s23_srvr.c. I guess I am
doing something stupid. If I understand this code correctly this expects
the client to send a header for SSL but I am sending a get request cause
all I am doing is doing an open to:
okay if this is not how I am supposed to test this... please tell me?

Yeah, you can''t just telnet to the port to test it out. You have to
use
ssleay. ssleay has a terminal mode, where you can connect to port 443
securely. I''m not sure what it is offhand though. if you just type
ssleay, you will be placed in its "menu mode," from where you can type
help and get a list of commands.
Please let us know if this helps.

That was my problem!! When I connected to:
https://www.mydomain.com/
It works!!! Shesh I am embarased. But I didn''t see that anywhere in
the
manual. It would help if it said somewhere this is how to connect. I
only see ''connect to your server'' but not exactly how.
Thanks,
Robert (aspiring web-thingy...)

We assumed most people would be using web browsers to test HTTP
connections. I think that''s a fairly safe assumption.

Hey all. I am new to the list.
Maybe this is obvious to many of you, but is it ok to run
multiple SSL-enabled vhosts with RHSS?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
This is a general errata update for Secure Web Server 2.0. The server
is now based on Apache 1.3.3 instead of Apache 1.3.1. PHP(2) and PHP3
have been updated, as well as mod_perl. Several severe bugs in the
secureweb-devel package which made building third party Dynamic Shared
Object modules difficult have been fixed.
The secureweb packages are distributed as a rhmask file to comply with
our patent licensing agreements with RSA Data Security, Inc. for their
encryption technology. To use them, you need to use the
''rhmask''
utility which is distributed as a part of Red Hat Linux. If you do
not already have it installed, please install it from your Red Hat
Linux CD or ftp site before proceeding. The other packages are normal RPMs.
The new packages can be found on ftp.redhat.com in the directory
/pub/redhat/updates/secureweb/2.0/i386.
To produce installable RPM files from the rhmask files, retrieve the
rhmask files via ftp and do the following, depending on which version
of Red Hat Linux you are using:
Red Hat 5.x:
- ------------
rhmask secureweb-2.0-1libc6.i386.rpm \
secureweb-2.0-2libc6.i386.rpm.rhmask
The original RPM is located only on your Secure Web Server CD, and
cannot be obtained via the Internet. Note: if you do not have the original
RPM located in the same directory as the rhmask file, you will need to
prefix the name of the RPM with the full path name to its location
(i.e. on your installation CD).
Once the new package has been created, you can upgrade with:
rpm -Uvh secureweb-2.0-2libc6.i386.rpm
If you wish to upgrade any of the Secure Web Server development
packages, you can do so as follows:
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/secureweb-devel-2.0-2libc6.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/secureweb-source-2.0-2libc6.i386.rpm
If you are using PHP(2), PHP3, or mod_perl, upgrade them as follows:
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_perl-1.16-1libc6.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_php-2.0.1-6libc6.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_php3-3.0.5-3libc6.i386.rpm
Red Hat 4.2:
- ------------
rhmask secureweb-2.0-1libc5.i386.rpm \
secureweb-2.0-2libc5.i386.rpm.rhmask
The original RPM is located only on your Secure Web Server CD, and
cannot be obtained via the Internet. Note: if you do not have the original
RPM located in the same directory as the rhmask file, you will need to
prefix the name of the RPM with the full path name to its location
(i.e. on your installation CD).
Once the new package has been created, you can upgrade with:
rpm -Uvh secureweb-2.0-2libc5.i386.rpm
If you wish to upgrade any of the Secure Web Server development
packages, you can do so as follows:
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/secureweb-devel-2.0-2libc5.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/secureweb-source-2.0-2libc5.i386.rpm
If you are using PHP(2), PHP3, or mod_perl, upgrade them as follows:
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_perl-1.16-1libc5.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_php-2.0.1-4libc5.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/secureweb/2.0/i386/mod_php3-3.0.5-2libc5.i386.rpm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: two Apache modules which were previously compiled as Shared
Objects (.so files) have now been directly included into the apache
binary, as is the default for apache 1.3.3. They are mod_log_config
and mod_proxy. If you have LoadModule directives for these two
modules in your /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file, Secure Web Server
will give errors at startup time and refuse to run until the offending
lines are commented out or removed. The standard httpd.conf file that
is shipped in the new packages does not have these lines, but if you
are keeping your own configuration file, you will have to make this
change manually.
To restart your Secure Web Server, do the following:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpsd restart
These packages have been PGP signed by Red Hat for security.
