FreeRIDE is written entirely in Ruby and is 100% plugin based for easy extension. FreeRIDE has come a long way in the last two years (with Laurent doing most of the work, and a little bit of help from myself and Rich Kilmer). Progress has been slow, but steady. All of us would like to see more features implemented, but we really need more ruby developer''s to push this along at a faster clip. Help to make FreeRIDE *your* IDE... the open source Ruby IDE built by the ruby community, for the ruby community. Here are some possible areas in which you could help: * Rails Support -- I''d love to see an optional plugin that provided direct support for developing Rails web applications. * Project Management -- someone is working on this, but he probably could use some help. * Help System -- local help with integrated links to web resources. * Advanced Editing -- template expansion, code completion. * Advanced Code Navigation -- for example, right-click on a name and be able to select "Go to Definition" * Internationalization * Scripting -- a super-simple way for a user to create and use tiny ruby scripts to help automate repetitive operations. * <insert-your-favorite-ide-feature-here> -- <subscribe-yourself-to-freeride-devel-ML-and-volunteer> Check it out at: http://freeride.rubyforge.org/wiki/wiki.pl Thanks, Curt

Re: Need FreeRIDE Contributors (was [ANN] FreeRIDE 0.9.2)
Curt: Is there documentation on how to write plugins for FreeRIDE? Vincent. P.S: What does everyone think about a Smalltalk-like environment for Ruby? You know, image-based, a class-browser, code always running, very tight integration of the language and the tools, etc.? After using Squeak, I can''t understand that newer languages still don''t go in that direction. Also, you really have to understand how the databus works (links to databus documentation are also on that page). The databus is a publish-subscribe messaging engine that is used for inter-plugin communication (it keeps the plugins loosely coupled). Also, someone once posted an awesome testimonial on the power of the databus and FreeRIDE''s plugin system titled "The coolest thing since sliced bread". You can read it here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/freeride-devel/2002-12/msg00017.html Curt> Vincent. > > P.S: What does everyone think about a Smalltalk-like environment for > Ruby? I was looking last week and had a lot of trouble > trying to track one down.We don''t post one to the files area, but you can get a dynamically generated one from the CVS browser by browsing into the FreeRIDE CVS repository and then into the freebase subdirectory. There you''ll find a link that reads "download tarball". I just did that, here''s the URL: http://rubyforge.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/freeride/freebase/freebase.tar.gz ?tarball=1&cvsroot=freeride For the benefit of those Rails ML subscribers who may not have read all the way down in my original post, there was a reason why I posted this to the Rails ML as well as the ruby-talk ML... Basically, I''d like to add support to FreeRIDE for Rails developers, and I posted it here in case someone here would be interested in taking this on. Curt

Think about the things you do repeatedly that could be automated. I''m sure the rails developers on this list could come up with some good suggestions. Curt
