You need to use defer or setTimeout to allow the browser enough time to
parse the html you just inserted. Example:
$(''mydiv'').innerHTML = ''<span
id="name1">John Smith</span>'';
(function() {
$(''name1'').observe(''click'', mycallback);
}).defer();
