The Biostatistics Analytics Team at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition seeks an MS/PhD in computer science (or related field) with experience in bioinformatics. The Analytics Team is responsible for computational support for projects involving large chemical and microbial hazard data sets, including bioinformatic and statistical analysis of bacterial genomic data for foodborne pathogens. The individual works with a team of statisticians and bioinformaticians to develop and improve methods for detecting and identifying bacterial pathogens from food and environmental sources The successful applicant would be expected to effectively interact with various subject matter experts in molecular biology, food safety, epidemiology, and other disciplines as program needs require. The applicant should be proficient in many of the standard programming languages and tool sets of relevance (Python, BioPython, R, Blast, NGS tools, ...). In addition, the applicant should be comfortable working with a wide variety of structured and unstuctured types of data, including geospatial, next generation sequencing, and social text data. Knowledge of standard software engineering best-practices, database design, architecture, and high performance computing all would be a plus for the applicant.
