In working with S-Plus I frequently found that when las=1 (always horizontal axis tick mark labels) the middle value of mgp needs to be different for the x- and y-axes. For the future I would like to see something like mgpx and mgpy which default to mgp, or optional 4th and 5th elements of mgp. I hope that R-core will consider this or something similar to it.
