R help - Apr 2001 - 'arg list too long' error message with 'make check'

All apologies if somebody came across this earlier, but I hit the
following problem with R-1.2.2 on IRIX6.5.
The 'make check' phase dies with

collecting examples for package `base' ...
 >>> Building/Updating help pages for package `base'
     Formats: text example
sh[10]: ../../bin/massage-Examples: arg list too long
*** Error code 1 (bu21)
*** Error code 1 (bu21)
*** Error code 1 (bu21)
*** Error code 1 (bu21)
*** Error code 1 (bu21)

Any hint would be greatly appreciated.
