R help - Jul 2000 - What is that?

Hi,

I did a scatter plot involving to variables x and y where x is a 2 levels factor
and y is a numeric "vector". I kind of expected to see a series of
points for both levels of x, which I got. But in addition there is also an
horizontal rectangle and a line for both levels. My question is what's the
meaning of these?

Sounds like a boxplot to me. If x is a factor then plot.factor will be
called, which gives a boxplot if y is numeric and a barplot if y is a
factor or is missing [help(plot.factor)].
>From your description it sounds as though y is very skewed, so the boxplot
looks strange.
