Hi all, I am considering buying S-Plus but I wonder if that is really necessary since it seems to be possible doing most (all?) things using R instead. More specifically I am interested in the functions available in the SpatialStats module of S-Plus. It seems as if the functions in the module (Khat, variogram, correlogram etc.) are not available in R base. I now wonder: Are these spatial functions available somewhere on the web? Can I load the SpatialStats module into R without having S-Plus or in some other way get the functions from the module into R? I am using Windows NT 4.0. More worryingly, it might almost work but give wrong answers in some cases. It wouldn''t be supported (we don''t have the code and Mathsoft obviously wouldn''t feel obliged to help). In any case, if you want the commercial add-ons to S-PLUS you probably want S-PLUS itself. -thomas Thomas Lumley Assistant Professor, Biostatistics University of Washington, Seattle -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) In particular, VR''s "spatial" package does have correlogram, variogram, and Kfn (which is the equivalent of Khat), and the sgeostat package appears to have a variety of variogram estimators. I think it depends on your degree of expertise, how much of a cheapskate you are, and how much you''re willing to fuss to make things work. I suspect that S+SpatialStats was originally built on top of the VR functions, but it has been extended and polished since; the documentation is certainly more polished (I''ve bought S-PLUS and S+SpatialStats, but haven''t got around to using them yet -- not because I''ve been using R to do the same things, but just because I haven''t done any of that kind of spatial work recently). If you have any particular analyses in mind I can look in the S+SpatialStats manual and see if they''re covered.
