It sounds like this is the old neglected 68k mac verion of R. You need to
start it by clicking on the document, rather than the application (I.e.
the square icon, rather than the diamond one).
There is a somewhat newer PowerPC version (which is not very tested).
Fetch on of the files:

or
ftp://stat.auckland.ac.nz/pub/ihaka/MacR-0.64a-SmallDist.sea.Hqx
If you have limited disk space (say < 100Mb) use the "small
version"
which has the help files stripped out).
These are by no means as actively supported as the other R versions.
