R help - Jul 1998 - R-beta: Plot legend

I am trying to use a legend for a data set plotted with both points and
lines.  If I use     
       legend(x,y,c("test 1","test
2"),lty=1:2,pch=c("x","o"))
I get

                        x   ------    test 1
                        o   ......    test 2

Is there any way I can get 

                          ---x---    test 1
                          ...o...    test 2
