I pick up my mail at pop-server.hawaii.edu (University of Hawaii) but work at home with cable internet connection so send mail via smtp-server.hawaii.rr.com (because smpt-server.hawaii.edu won't let me send messages coming from hawaii.rr.com). I use gfeeney@hawaii.edu as my email address and normally have this as the return address. Posting to R-help, however, messages are bounced unless I change the return to address to feeneyg001@hawaii.rr.com. With this change they don't bounce, but they don't seem to get through. Attempting to build R-1.0.0 from source I get the following. F:\rw1000\src\gnuwin32>make BUILD=MINGW32 mkdir -p ../../bin F:/GCC-29~1.2/BIN/MAKE.EXE -C ./fixed MAKE.EXE[1]: Entering directory `F:/rw1000/src/gnuwin32/fixed' MAKE.EXE[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'. MAKE.EXE[1]: Leaving directory `F:/rw1000/src/gnuwin32/fixed' cp -pr unzip ../.. rm -f ../../unzip/*.h Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string F:\GCC-29~1.2\BIN\MAKE.EXE: *** [console.d] Error 2 By way of background, I am running Windows 95 4.00.950 and had, following rw1000\src\gnuwin32\install file: 1 installed mingw32 gcc-2.95.2 (MSVCRT) and put gcc-2.95.2\bin in the path; 2 installed cygwin user tools and put cygwin-b20\h-i586-cygwin32\bin in the path; 3 [Perl5 was already installed and in the path]; 4 'set MAKE_MODE=UNIX'; 5 untarred R-1.0.0.tgz in f:\ and changed directory name from R-1.0.0 to rw1000; 6 left rw1000\src\gnuwin32\MkRules unchanged; 7 edited rw1000\src\gnuwin32\Makefile to put WINHELP=NO; 8 created rw1000\unzip\ and copied unzip32.dll from binary distribution into it; 9 ran make BUILD=MINGW32 with the result shown above. The result ("Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string ... MAKE.EXE: *** [console.d] Error 2")is the same whether I use the DOS shell or the cygwin bash shell. I'm just learning how to build from source and am insufficiently familiar with make and makefiles to diagnose what's wrong and how to proceed. The Note 2 statement that "the Makefiles do not work unchanged on all the possible combinations of tools, compilers and OSes" is noted. Suggestions on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. --8sD16rPb6u-- -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-devel mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !)
