Puppet users - Nov 2013 - ERB problem with scope.lookupvar().each

I am trying to use the bcarpio/hadoop module, and after modifying the 
params.pp to have the array of slave servers, the slaves.erb file is 
erroring out:

Error: Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 400 on SERVER: 
Failed to parse template hadoop/conf/slaves.erb:
  Filepath: /etc/puppet/modules/hadoop/templates/conf/slaves.erb
  Line: 1
  Detail: undefined method `each'' for nil:NilClass
 at /etc/puppet/modules/hadoop/manifests/cluster.pp:25 on node 
hdp-node14.lol.jf.intel.com
Warning: Not using cache on failed catalog
Error: Could not retrieve catalog; skipping run

I have tried adding quotes similar to the ''learning puppet''
documentation,
but the error is consistent.
