Later this week, we will be moving our puppet server to an ancient IBM PowerPC 970FX (akin to the Mac G5 server) with 8 cores and 16GB RAM. It will run ubuntu-server, apache+ss, passenger and puppet. However, at the moment our server is an IBM HS20, x86_64, with 4 cores and 1GB of RAM. It is handling 725+ compute nodes and their gateways, all running RHEL 5 or CentOS 5.3, ruby 1.8.5. While we are not pushing the server --it is managing files in etc/profile.d, etc/rc.local, sudoers, and motd; we are serving 3 files comparable in size to passwd, shadow and /etc/group, about 30k each. I change them regularly. We are using apache+ssl, passenger 2.2.2 and rack. The server has settled down to 11 httpd instances, and 4 rack instances, and 854MB ram. Swap is not currently being used. I have had to increase the interval of log rotation since /var/log/messages grows fairly quickly: 11MB is less than 18 hours. Uptime shows: 15:30:23 up 5 days, 5:31, 2 users, load average: 0.18, 0.19, 0.18 Another data point.
