Building openssh 3.1p1 on Sparc Solaris 8 platform. The configure step output
the warnings below:

ssh builds and will run but xterms end up going into inverse video mode.

got the same warning message on SunOS 5.6 too.

I didn't have that result
(connected from SunOS 8, Linux and AIX)
