Networking issues with OpenSolaris/Dom0 or VMware Fusion
Hi: I got OpenSolaris 2008.05 running as dom0 under VmWare fusion on my MacBook pro. Using the instructions from Dipleep''s blog http://blogs.sun.com/dkumar/entry/how_to_create_domu_in Everything seems okay except the networking. When booting OpenSolaris (without dom0) the pcn0 interface works just fine but when booting Solaris xVM version them pcn0 does not work (ie) I get failures from dhcp of the interface. By default the interface is plumed with no inet address. When I try ifconfig pcn0 dhcp start it hangs for a few minutes and fails. Any pointers on how I can resolve this issue. Thanks Angelo

Have you tried the 2.0 beta? James On May 12, 2008, at 11:35 PM, Angelo Rajadurai wrote:> Hi: > > I got OpenSolaris 2008.05 running as dom0 under VmWare fusion > on my MacBook pro. Re: Networking issues with OpenSolaris/Dom0 or VMware Fusion
You mean VMware 2. 0 beta right. Yes, thats what I''m using. Version 2.0b1 (89933) What is the network driver that I should be using? I do not see the xnf device being created? Should I still be able to use the pcn driver? Has anyone else tried this? Please confirm if I have it right: - OpenSolaris 2008.05 boots under VMware 2.0 beta without Xen and works fine (pcn interface), - OpenSolaris 2008.05 boots under VMware 2.0 beta with Xen, but the pcn interface doesn''t work. There are no Xen guest domains involved. Is that right?

Re: Networking issues with OpenSolaris/Dom0 or VMware Fusion
My take about this: Angelo, you cannot use VT extensions twice, only one thing can use them. Theoretically you could run a modified domU under VMware or VirtualBox since VT extensions are mainly for speed and for supporting HVM guests like Windows and FreeBSD. OpenSolaris 2008.05 for the purpose of everything except virtualization works without many issues on VMware Fusion 2.0 beta on Mac OS X. The main issues as they have been, is the mouse. Even if it were, it could well be a very difficult problem (especially without having access to the source for the pcn emulator (which is part of VMware)). Did you try asking VMware about it?

You can force 32-bit guests to use e1000 instead under VMware Fusion, Server, and Workstationn. http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/opensolaris-help/2007-February/005224.html James On May 13, 2008, at 1:01 PM, David Edmondson wrote:> > On 13 May 2008, at 1:38pm, Angelo Rajadurai wrote: >>> - OpenSolaris 2008.05 boots under VMware 2.0 beta with Xen, but the >>> pcn interface doesn''t work. >>> >> Yes, this is exactly my issue. > > Figuring out how to fix this (non-working pcn driver when Xen is > booted under VMware) is not likely to be high up our list of > priorities.
