Hi, is Xen supported on Solaris Express Developer Edition b70? Should I follow a specific upgrade path? Where can I get the latest Xen for solaris? The documentation seems to be really out of date and I hear people using b75... This message posted from opensolaris.org

No.> Should I follow a specific upgrade path?you can download the latest Xen "drop", based on Nevada build 66, off of opensolaris.org (don''t have the path, sorry), or wait for build of Nevada b75 containing the Solaris xVM bits (no, the name change is not a mistake [on my part, anyway]) to materialise on one of our download sites (presumably, somewhere off of www.sun.com/downloads - again, I don''t have a more specific link, or a timeframe, sorry about that). John Levon''s log (http://blogs.sun.com/levon/entry/solaris_xen_update) has some more details and links for you to follow. I see a lot of people who are already using b75, even though the community edition b73, where did they get it? This message posted from opensolaris.org

That is available internally now (nothing pre-packaged, just source and nightly builds). If you are happy to build from source, you can pull the current Nevada source and create build 75 based binaries. dme.

I used to manage a Solaris system, and it was sweet. But this opensolaris stuff seems to suffer badly from easy to follow startup instructions.

What path do you speak of, just hit enter, use the top entry, I''d assume. Xen doesn''t boot from the installer DVD. Grub entries are created by the BFU which are essentially part of the OS installed by the Xen-specific OpenSolaris DVD> Don''t even use Linux to try and think about installing another OS, that makes no sense to do so. Enough with the clicky clicky, with Xen you''re gonna have to get off your lickable candy horse and do some work. It''s been around for 1/4th the time it has been on NetBSD or Linux, without commercial support (Not even from Sun yet) so quit complaining. James

Last time I ran a hosting business, I ran Solaris - it was, and probably still is the most mature and solid version of unix around. These days I run linux, but would like to start using Solaris again. But lets not get into religous wars. Right now, I''m simply trying to get started with an install b66 xen drop, and can''t get past burning a DVD from the ISO - and, based on the forum, I''m not the only one. I have no problem doing some work (and, by the way, I''ve installed Xen on other systems), but when the DVD doesn''t boot itself into something, and there is not even a basic README file - it would be sort of nice to get some useful feedback, not a diatribe. It still comes down to, the DVD doesn''t seem to want to boot. Others seem to have the same problem. Suggestions please. And, by the way, it''s quite common to use one o/s environment to cross-compile or otherwise build an install disk for another.
HI Miles, Your best bet is to wait a week or so for b75 to become available for download and start with that. b75 is the first build that has the xen (now referred to as xVM in opensolaris) as part of the standard distribution. ps: the problem I had with the boot dvd initially was corruption of one of the parts of the b66 download and therefore the image was not correct. It would give me a grub boot prompt but not the grub menu. cheers, James On 13/10/2007, at 11:21 PM, Miles Fidelman wrote:> It still comes down to, the DVD doesn''t seem to want to boot. Just as a check, I burned a copy of the developer edition, and it booted and installed just fine on my system - so maybe there''s a driver somewhere that''s been updated since b66. Thanks, Miles
