Nut upsuser - Feb 2012 - Nut on Mac mini

Hi,

I have a Mac mini running Lion, a windows 2008 vm and a Synology Nas. I want to
connect the two devices to an APC Back-up 550 which has a USB connection. The
Nas can be connect to a NUT, hence my endavour to install NUT as a server on
Lion. Not sure yet if i need NUT on the Windows VM or if the Mac can just
suspend the VM.

The Mac recognized the UPS automatically and i tried to install NUT, NUT-USB and
NUT-CGI. I have to say you have to be quite technical to do anything like this
on macs. Nothing for the average users, by all means. It doesn't make it
easier that there is a huge lack on documentation and example configs. But
anyway, on one of the websites, it noted that there can be a conflict with
NUT-USB and later ios if the ios recognizes the ups as well. Unfortunately i
didn't find anything that explains how to solve the conflict. Any ideas? I
use on all of them the latest versions.

A quick search says the Synology NAS can be a NUT server - true?

There was a pretty huge lack of interest in NUT on OS on our mailing lists until
your email came in :-)

The short answer is that there is no easy way to make NUT talk to a USB UPS on
OS X the same way as on Linux or *BSD.

So if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I started looking at a way for
NUT to communicate with the OS X UPS manager, but that API is a bit of a mess as
well. It seems possible, but complicated to code up. If it works, it should be
simple for end users to install, but I won't have much time to devote to
coding that until much later this year.

Your best bet might be to configure the Mac to be a client to NUT on the NAS.
Suspending the VM is going to depend on what virtualization software you are
using, but there is a beta of a Windows NUT client on networkupstools.org if you
want to go that route.
