Hi Steve,
I believe this was a convenience function added for use with libraries such
as BDCC GEO (http://www.bdcc.co.uk/Gmaps/BdccGeo.js) for determining point
distances from polylines/routes.
As such, this is very likely to have only been implemented fro Google maps.
