I''ve been hiding in a cave hacking lnd code, and haven''t paid much attention to this list lately. I''m about to embark on a 2.6.18 vanilla effort. Last I heard, there were problems reported with using the stock 2.6.18 vanilla patchset; something about mballoc not working right. What''s the current state of the art with kernel patches for 2.6.18 (or later) vanilla kernels? If anybody has hints or amended patches, they''d be much appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Will that stuff apply equally to lustre 1.6?

Yes, the kernels are the same between 1.4 and 1.6. What''s the prognosis on 1.4.9? Still expected this week? If not, perhaps someone at cfs would be kind enough to send me just the kernel-patches part of it?

But it looks like you can''t expect anything real soon. There''s some activity happening on that front (see cfs bug #11039) but it doesn''t look like it''s ready for prime time yet. There''s a chance that in the next few weeks I may end up diving back in and trying to come up with a version of that stuff which works. But I think that''s unlikely. Trying to build 1.4.9 on debian etch here. Ok. I''m focussed on lustre 1.6, but I would expect that the kernel support would be the same, or close to it. If I run across anything I''ll let you know. You might also ask Tim Snider (Tim, you listening?) as he''s got at least a partial solution using 2.6.18.

Also found a thread on the devel mailing list which you may be referencing -- mballoc issues with 2.6.18 on the MDS systems -- a patch was attached which apparently fixes the issue -- will give that a shot as well. Operations are reportedly fine on the OSS. Trying to build 1.4.9 on debian etch here.> > Ok. But I think that''s unlikely. For 1.6, you also might want to look at https://bugzilla.lustre.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11675 that seems to solve a few problems.> Trying to build 1.4.9 on debian etch here.OK. You might want to have a look at debian packaging of lustre 1.6, I found it at svn://alioth.debian.org/svn/pkg-lustre ... It should be relatively easy to adapt for 1.4 ... I''m currently playing with using the Debian 2.6.18 kernel with the above patches on servers and running the Ubuntu 2.6.15-server kernels with the patchless client on computing nodes, all machines running Ubuntu Dapper. Stuff builds, runs, and I can create a file and run bonnie, so it''s not totally broken ;) /Nikke -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Niklas Edmundsson, Admin @ {acc,hpc2n}.umu.se | nikke@hpc2n.umu.se --------------------------------------------------------------------------- BIGAMY: One wife too many. I will try all suggested to try and get 1.4.9working on etch and report back if all goes well. Thanks for the pointers / suggestions. Regards, Mustafa. -- Mustafa A.
