[Lustre-discuss] Lustre 1.6.0 beta4 is now available
NOTE: NOT FOR PRODUCTION USE Cluster File Systems is pleased to announce the next beta version of Lustre 1.6, which includes all of the features that will be in the production release, including: * MountConf. This new configuration and management system extends the zeroconf concept from clients to servers, so that mounting a server starts it and unmounting stops it. Server configuration is specified when you format the storage, so lconf and lmc have been retired. * New storage can be added dynamically to a live cluster -- just format a new device and mount it. * Startup order invariance - start servers in any order * Optimized stripe assignments * Patchless client support, which allows the Lustre client to run on unmodified kernel distributions. (vanilla 2.6.16+ and RHEL4 so far) * NFS export support * Improved ''find'' * Version interoperability with 1.4.6.x * Many more improvements (see ChangeLog) The new beta is known as 1.6beta4, (or internal version 1.5.91) Partners, customers, and evaluators can download this release from: http://www.clusterfs.com/download-beta.html Please see the Lustre wiki for more information about this release: https://mail.clusterfs.com/wikis/lustre/MountConf Thank you for your assistance; as always, you can report issues via Bugzilla (https://bugzilla.clusterfs.com/) or email (support@clusterfs.com). -- The Lustre Team --

What does "Optimized stripe assignments" mean? Is it the location of the stripes that is optimized or the stripe count/width? The location of the stripes. We now try to separate the stripes across machines, not just disks (to improve network loading), as well as fill emptier OSTs first. (The balance can be tuned under /proc/fs/lustre/lov/<lovname>/qos_prio_free - increasing the value means weight free space more.)
