Are you doing clean build? I had same problems, when I had some early
gcc helpers built from old sources and not being rebuilt during upgrade.

yes - everything is being built from scratch with apple's system gcc.

i'm also having troubles compiling llvm head on x86_64 (debian) with  
gcc 4.1 (debug build fails due to conversion warnings) while gcc 3.4  
(as a host compiler) works fine.
