Open source development continues, but the group has grown from those small beginnings to encompass QA, performance, testing and support for enterprise Linux customers. Our global team contributes to Open Source projects and promotes the adoption of Linux at Oracle and in the industry in general. Oracle has a longstanding commitment to the success of Linux, with the first commercial database on Linux in 1998 and the formation of the Linux Engineering team in 2002. Posting Description: Debug and patch the Linux kernel, and work on Open Source projects with Oracle's Linux Sustaining team. As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing requirements. Duties and tasks are varied and complex requiring independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. Detailed Description Enjoy debugging code and solving problems? Oracle's Linux Sustaining team is looking for engineers who are interested in debugging and patching the Linux operating system. With Linux's surge in popularity, our team is dedicated to ensuring enterprise quality performance from Linux and providing quick response to pressing Linux issues. Much of our work is customer-driven, though it does not often involve direct interaction with customers. The main focus of our development revolves around the Linux kernel and the standard C libraries. Excellent problem solving and analytical skills are essential to break down the complex issues we see involving OS and process interaction. In addition, sustaining group engineers are encouraged to work on and contribute to open source development projects. Preferred Qualifications a.. Advanced/expert fluency with C b.. Experience working with UNIX kernels, or demonstrably similar large software projects c.. Operational knowledge of Enterprise Linux distributions is expected (e.g. RHEL4, SLES9, CentOS) d.. Knowledge of bash, perl, and/or python are a bonus. e.. Oracle knowledge is not required f.. Desire to work with a team in a fast-paced environment g..
