Hi Would it be worthwhile to have a "place" where real world examples of applying Dtrace to solve a production problem be showcased? Almost like a "hall of fame" for Dtrace problems that was solved in production. Here I''m talking about problems that do _not_ enter Sun via the normal support procedure ... but rather solaris administrators that used Dtrace to shed some light on a application or system problem, be that code or performance related. The target audience would be anybody that heard about Dtrace, but do not really understand why and how it is being used in the "field". Or someone that frankly don''t see the point ... here I see some stubborn customers and fanboy''s ;) Idea? Comments? It could be a great marketing tool for Sun and Opensolaris, but more importantly it could be a great showcase to get everybody that works with their specific OS to start thinking about things just a little differently. Dtrace is fantastic (especially if you watch Brian do his thing during the Google Summer of code demo) ... but it is somewhat daunting, and you need to stimulate dark crevasses of your brain to apply it to daily problems. Once done ... it changes your life forever :) PS: No, it is not a place to get free support ... that would be opensolaris.org *just kidding!!* *hehe*

If it could get an RSS feed so that it is easy to see when new items pop up, that would be great. Here''s one I ran across a while back. Admittedly this could have been solved with truss as well, but with dtrace I was able to easily give an obscene number of zero byte reads per second without significantly slowing down the processes or doing a bunch of post-processing. http://mgerdts.blogspot.com/2007/04/todays-dtrace-one-liners.html -- Mike Gerdts http://mgerdts.blogspot.com/
When you do a Dtrace Hall of Fame consider adding Dtrace-based SGE master monitor http://wiki.gridengine.info/wiki/index.php/Dtrace it extracts high-level performance data for bottleneck analysis in Grids with thousands of compute nodes. More info on SGE is under http://gridengine.sunsource.net/ http://www.sun.com/software/gridware/ Regards, Andreas On Wed, 14 Nov 2007, Mike Gerdts wrote:> On Nov 14, 2007 12:45 AM, Louwtjie Burger <zabermeister at gmail.com> wrote: >> Hi >> >> Would it be worthwhile to have a "place" where real world examples of >> applying Dtrace to solve a production problem be showcased? > > I like the idea. Are you going to copy contents of their blogs or to deliver just URL to the blogs ?
