dovecot - Aug 2009 - Proxying external IMAP servers

For those admins who, for whatever ill-advised reason, need to allow users 
access to external IMAP servers - like AOL - is there a benefit to using 
Dovecot as a proxy instead of simply having the clients access the external 
servers directly?

After logging in Dovecot's proxy does nothing but forward the traffic.
So I don't see any benefits.
