dovecot - Jun 2007 - Connection dropped by IMAP server _ Internal login failure: root

Dear reader,

Please help me find a way through this problem,

I have CentOS 4.2, dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4, squirrelmail-1.4.8,
While I try to log in as Root (username: root; password: password) I get the
error that says,

1st of all: 0.99 is really old and unsopported. Try getting a new version (for 
example at atrpms.net)

2nd: IMO, reading mail as root is a really bad idea. You should redirect it to 
another non-system user.

3rd: Surely you haven't changed 

#first_valid_uid = 500

Try changing it.
