CentOS - Jul 2007 - Noob Question: Keyboard Shortcut - Enter Date - Time

In X (preferably Gnome), is there a way I can set a keyboard shortcut to 
enter the date (preferably in a configurable format) into the current 
position of the cursor in the top window?
