Looking for assistance
We have about 5 servers spread out throughout the country: 2 Centos 4.4, 1 Red Hat and 2 windows machines- looking for some good ideas for a back-up solution. Our servers hold a lot of data, but only a small portion of it is crucial on any given day. That crucial portion is always changing (for example, this week the crucial files all relate to November- current and previous projects, and the next

Emailing from Command Line

I have a working ssmtp config on a Gentoo system that works just fine, but on CentOS it's not working. Moving files to new server
Hello, I am getting a new computer and am going to need to move the files from the old to the new. What is the best way to do this? Should I install CentOS from scratch on the new computer then move the directories I need? How do I maintain permissions if this is the best way? TIA Eddie

(Long) Newbie Question on Authentification w/ 2.0.3 & PDC
Thanks for Reading! Installed 2.0.3 with remote browsing and as a domain member per the docs. All is going just fine, but I have noticed something interesting about authenticating against the PDC. I have created accounts on the UNIX side ( Slack 3.5 , kernel 2.0.36 ) with temp passwords. The account names on the Linux side match the usernames on the NT side, but the passwords are different. I

Self-signed certificates
Hello, I am trying to create a self-signed certificate for a sub-domain. Creating the certificate is not the problem. I used cacert.org to complete it. When I made the certificate, it was for the sub-domain but the certificate for the top-level domain is the certificate that appears. In the <VirtualHost> section for the sub-domain, I have pointed to the sub-domain key:

Centos and Software RAID
I purchased an Intel D945GNT motherboard and it comes in the BIOS with an option to create a RAID 0 or RAID 1 volumes using my existing two SATA disks. However when installing Centos 4.3 x86_64 I see the the installer recognices the two drives and does not "see" the RAID 0. Is that ok? Should I disable the RAID in the BIOS and then go for a LVM+RAID 0 setup in the installer ? Since it

Changing from dynamic ip to static ip
Hello, I have been on a dynamic ip for about 5 years and have just upgraded to a static ip. I know I need to change my network setup on my eth0 nic to static and stop ddclient from trying to update my address but is there _really_ anything else I need to change. I have a couple of websites on this address using *:80 in my httpd.conf. I can easily change this but don't think it would really

Installing Centos4.3 in VMWare on XP
Evening everyone, I'm trying to install Centos 4.3 in VMWare Workstation running on Windows XP (my laptop). I downloaded the CD iso's to my Linux box and burned them (I did them correctly since last time I screwed them up). However, when I start the VM in VMWare, it says the CD isn't bootable. Any ideas? Thanks! Jeff

Limiting files when using rsync
I use the following command to sync the home directory on the two computers, however I would like not to send the "dot" files e.g. ".ssh". Can that be done, and if so, how would I construct the command line? /usr/bin/rsync -av -e ssh /home/ 192.168.0.22:/home/ Many thanks.... Large number of prefixes in a route to a trunk
We're beginning to test MultiTech's CallFinder CDMA Units, one for Sprint PCS and one for Alltel. They sell both. Our intent is to use them as a backup line for our main office (which has a PRI) and a backup/911 line for our remote offices which are all connected via * over a VPN with no local trunks at any of them. In the interest of maximizing use of the lines, I'm putting

Tape drive recommendations
Hello all. I have 15 or so CentOS servers (now v4.4, I will upgrade them all to 5 when it comes out) and a few windows machines. I am looking to implement a network backup solution using Amanda. I will be backing up 200 gig or so to start, but that will grow. Does anyone have any recommendations on tape drives that will work "out of the box" with CentOS? Thanks, Joe

Speaking of 3Ware/RAID/SATA/9550SX...
I just built up a server running CentOS 4.3, and trying to boot from a 3Ware 9550SX-16ML, 16 port card. This system has 9x500GB drives, AMD Opteron, Tyan K8SD mobo and 1 GB of ram. I downloaded the latest (9.3.0.4) driver from 3Ware, and after a couple of botched attempts, I got CentOS installed. In my two botched attempts, the problem was X hanging during the formatting of the drives, so I

rsync doesn't update directory ownership
Hi all, Has anyone encountered this: On ServerA, I make this directory: /var/ftp/pub/userA with ownership root.root It gets rsynced to serverB with this command: rsync -avzgorp --delete -e ssh /var/ftp/pub/ root at serverB:/var/ftp/pub/ However, when I change the ownership of /var/ftp/pub/userA to userA.userA, this change is not rsync-ed to serverB. Is there any option to achieve this? Thank

newbie uk questions...
hi: Just starting out with *, and I'm planning to heed the advice to start simple and small, but the goal i'm aiming for eventually is: *-based pbx for 10-20 seat small business, based in the UK. Users will have PoE SIP hardphones. So far so good, but two questions, both UK-specific, relating to connection to the outside world (PSTN or VoIP): - are there any UK-based VoIP providers
