How does one go about connecting Asterisk to a Meridian PBX to handle voicemail? I have a customer who is out of capacity on their voicemail system (which connects to their meridian via several FXS cards) and I would like to see if I could use Asterisk to handle their voicemail. -Jonathan
I did it rerouting Forward Busy and Forward Noanswer from Meridian to a number in Asterisk that was a prefix+extension, and taking that as DIDs in asterisk directly to the voicemail of the extension. Of course there was no flasshing light on Meridian phones, but voicemail arrives via e-mail or web (using AMPortal). Capacity as in not enough lines or capacity as in not enough mailboxes? FXS lines doesn't sound right. How does the current system know which mailbox to put the call? A T1/E1 type interface would be more likely. You forward the call to the * server over the T1 by addressing the mailbox's 4 digit number. Do you user currently know if they have VM or do they have do dial in and see? Mark Jonathan k. They are running out of mailboxes. I didn't think it sounded right either. I haven't seen the equipment but from what I've been told by another engineer here who normally works with this customer the current voicemail system is connected to the meridian as 4 extensions on the meridian system. I would have thought that the T1/E1 interface is what they would need. They currently have an indicator light on the phone but I told him that as far I knew if they went this route the voicemail would arrive in their email box or they would have to login to see if they had any. I didn't see any way to get the info to the phones either. -Jonathan -----Original Message----- From: asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Mark Phillips Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 4:13 PM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: Re: [Asterisk-Users] Asterisk for Voicemail Server Capacity as in not enough lines or capacity as in not enough mailboxes? This system is not as the engineer thought, he did show me a system that worked the way he described though. The basic idea (if it were translated to an asterisk system) would be that there are 4 extensions on the PBX which instead of ringing phones, ring ports on this external voicemail server, the server sends the caller to the voicemail box matching the DID. (4 digits in this case for the extensions originally called which is now going to voicemail) In any case....the system in question is using an interconnect and I will be hooking up asterisk via a T1 link. -Jonathan -----Original Message----- From: asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of Mark Phillips Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 4:23 PM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: Re: [Asterisk-Users] Asterisk for Voicemail Server Been there done that too. Good old BT branded gear. Its the same thing. A T1/E1 in the PBX connected via a crossover cable to the * server. As for the 4 extensions listed below, I think I know what your engineer is talking about. A classic VM system consumes "ports" in the PBX. Your client has had to give away 4 of these to the VM system. My guess is that there's some sort of data (ADSI??) that goes along with the call when it lights up one of the VM ports. Hi; I have a setup where i forwards a given fxo port to a fixed IP phone all the time through my asterisk box. It takes about 12 seconds to setup a call (from the time the call is sent on the PSTN until it reaches the IP phone). I replace my asterisk box with a Cisco 1760V gateway and the time is reduced to 6 seconds for the same exact experiment. Does any body have an idea how i can shave the 12 seconds on the asterisk box? Like can i reduce the number of rings before the asterisk box routes the call or any other parameters that can reduce the timing. Thanks M.Smadi
