He's using asterisk to communicate his office and home, that are about 3km away. He is using some linksys and cisco wireless routers (linux based), and with updates firmwares, he was obtaining pretty good quality last time i checked.

I had planed to use Wifi to connect my office phones. I set the network up 1 asterisk server, 3 snom phones, 1 sipura 2000 and a zyxel 2000w with a Linksys AP in a small office. I used WEP and g729a throughout. We then tried the system. It basically worked, but the quality was patchy. For example, in any 5 minute call I'd have at least a single half second drop out. I got the cable contractors in, they ran cat5 everywhere, and the quality improved to the point that it is indistinguishable from any other PBX. By the way, the same wifi network is fine for email, browsing etc. Tim.

We have several installations using WiFi (10 km average). IMO the voice quality is related to the radio network design and radio quality. Jorge Mendoza Paco Perez wrote:> Hello. I've successfully implemented several VOIP over WiFi networks in the UK with excellent quality. I am currently in Canada. The trick is designing a good wifi backhaul network in quasi full duplex. His wireless provider uses Cisco's wireless gear to provide wide area coverage (guess about five mile coverage), and since his "house" cannot access their tower, he has an additional wireless link from his barn to his house using Linksys equipment in a bridging mode. It works fine with both g711 and g729 codecs most of the time, but once in a great while the local Linksys units lose connectivity. The lost path will typically last from about five to more then 100 seconds. It happens so infrequent that no one with any practical wireless experience has attempted to identify that issue (as yet). We support several other isp's in the US that also use wireless, and most of the commercial/quality installations will support voip just fine. Non othe them use the inexpensive 802.11 gear however.
