[Asterisk-Users] What is the best and easiest flavor to be usedwith Asterisk.
I'm using CentOS - which is another Red Hat Enterprise clone, like WBEL www.centos.org I've had no problems of any kind with the OS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Imran Sadiq" <imran@lancom.co.nz> To: <asterisk-users@lists.digium.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 9:58 PM Subject: [Asterisk-Users] What is the best and easiest flavor to be usedwith Asterisk. Could anyone please advise me on the best flavor of Linux on which Asterisk is easiest to install. I am currently using RH8.0, everything over the IP works fine but when I want to call a physical line I can only have conversation for about 3 sec and everything freezes after that. I have to hard reset the machine to bring it back up. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Any distro will work. Asking for "what's the best distro" is like asking the world's population "what's the best religion" or something. But then, here's my preferences: I use SuSE on the servers since IBM told me to. I'll recommend Debian or Gentoo, as they're free and non-commercial and very good. I'll recommend against Fedora, since it's a test-bed for RedHat (same stuff as Debian Testing or Unstable - not good for production). but again, that's just my prefs roy On Jan 12, 2005, at 4:58, Imran Sadiq wrote:> Could anyone please advise me on the best flavor of Linux on which > Asterisk is easiest to install. > > ? > > I am currently using RH8.0, everything over the IP works fine but when > I want to call a physical line I can only have conversation for about > 3 sec and everything freezes after that. > > ? > > I have to hard reset the machine to bring it back up. I use www.piebox.com (a Redhat AS Clone) which provides a good compromise between stability/release testing and cost - however I'm just using it on a test machine. Also you can grab RPMS from ftp://ftp.linuxsys.com/pub/releases/FC1 for an easy installation. The only caveat I know of with these packages is that something has changed in Asterisk recently where it is not happy running as user "asterisk" which is what my packaging intends to do. Until I have time to figure this out, I recommend that you edit line 26 in /etc/init.d/asterisk and remove "--user asterisk" the line reads: daemon /usr/sbin/safe_asterisk This change will cause asterisk to run as root. I will get around to making this a option set /etc/sysconfig/asterisk eventually but for now you will have to edit the said file. Other than that, grab the kernel when you download and you wont have to recompile anything. Is that a CVS-head thing? I have setup 1.0.3 today running as non-root asterisk user on FC2 no problems. My experience > with Fedora Core is not good. > > Seshu KanuriOn the contrary, I have over 30 FC1 machines in the field and they are running just fine. I build a lot of supplemental packages for the distribution so my installation is not pure Fedora. Since I don't change core packages I would imagine an out of the box FC1 is just as stable. I have seen many posts all over that FC1 is unstable. It has worked very well for us since day one but we use quality hardware in all our servers so maybe that is what makes the difference? -- Andrew McRory - President/CTO Linux Systems Engineers, Inc. - http://www.linuxsys.com Located in beautiful Tallahassee, Florida Office 850-224-5737 Office 850-575-7213 Mobile 850-294-7567
