asterisk users - Apr 2003 - Packet8 New Area Codes and Rate Centers

I received a message from Packet8 last night telling me they added some
new area codes.  I took a look at their new area code/rate center finder
page and it looks like the added a LOT of new area codes.  They now have
phone numbers available in almost every state.

The URL for finding out which area codes and rate centers are available
with Packet8 is at http://www.packet8.net/about/areacodes.asp

I have not gotten Asterisk to work with Packet8, however I have put very
little effort into making them work together.  It's easier to just plug
the DTA310 SIP/POTS device that you get from Packet8 into a X100P.

Does packet8 provide the same service Iconnethere does?  And if so,
do touch tones over it's network work?

This is good news, and I'm always pleased to see competition in the 
marketplace, especially in more area codes.  However, Packet8 will 
continue to rule itself out if they don't allow users to use their 
own hardware or an Asterisk server; it's simply a no-starter to have 
them force me into their hardware box.  Plugging the system into an 
X100P might work, but again is a no-starter - why am I doing another 
two steps of analog-digital conversion when I could just talk 
directly to their SIP proxy/gateway?  Kludge.  I'll go with providers 
that offer me VOIP service, not POTtedVOIP service.  Remember when 
the Bell System in the USA forced everyone to buy phone termination 
equipment from them?  Don't put us back in those dark days.
