R SIG Debian - Dec 2007 - symbol lookup error

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 - I installed R just fine, but when I try to run
I get the following error:

/usr/lib/R/bin/exec/R: symbol lookup
error: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.5: undefined symbol: PC

Any ideas?
