Hi all, According to the "Instant Windows" recipe, an AMD Opteron Rev F or later CPU is required to run Xen. Is the Opetern 152 CPU in the Ultra 20 OK? Here''s the output of psrinfo from my Ultra 20, if that helps: rich@marrakesh4103# psrinfo -vp The physical processor has 1 virtual processor (0) x86 (AuthenticAMD 20F71 family 15 model 39 step 1 clock 2613 MHz) AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 152 (Hopefully the "F" in 20F71 means yes.) Alas, I get a "no", so I guess I won''t be playing with Xen on my Ultra 20... :-( Oh well, -- Rich Teer, SCSA, SCNA, SCSECA, OGB member CEO, My Online Home Inventory URLs: http://www.rite-group.com/rich http://www.myonlinehomeinventory.com

My machine at work is Windoze-on-Xen capable, but it''d be nice to play with it at home first... Let me know how you get on - I am particularly interested in how people want to use this "windows on solaris on Xen" capability Chris
U20 can do xen just cannot do HVM(window) I have U20 that can do xVM for most linux regards Rich Teer wrote:> On Fri, 5 Oct 2007, Mark Johnson wrote: > > >> Try compiling & running this app... Hi Rich, Unfortunately not. You need an Ultra 20 M2 in order to run fully virtualized guests. Your Ultra 20 will run Xen, but only PV (paravirtualized) guest domains; Xen can''t run HVM domains without SVM/VTx hardware support. - Russ Rich Teer wrote:> Hi all, > > According to the "Instant Windows" recipe, an AMD Opteron Rev F or later > CPU is required to run Xen. I guess the next question is: short of replacing the box, is there a way of putting an HVM-capable Opteron processor in my Ultra 20? Are the newer Opterons pin-compatible with the old ones? -- Rich Teer, SCSA, SCNA, SCSECA, OGB member CEO, My Online Home Inventory URLs: http://www.rite-group.com/rich http://www.myonlinehomeinventory.com

You can google around to see what''s available for socket 939, but I don''t think AMD produced any revF cpus (the first rev with SVM support) in the 939 form factor. rob

The AMD-V stuff is available only in 2nd and 3rd generation Opterons (and, I think, same gen Athlon64). Which means only those with DDR2 and AM2 or SocketF. It would be nice to get a AMD-V chip for Socket 939/940, but it doesn''t appear on AMD''s roadmap. Only the M2-variants of the Ultra20/40, x4100/x4200/x4600/x2100/x2200 have the newer chips. Non-M2 versions of these, plus the v20z/v40z/w1100z/w2100z use the older 1st-gen Opterons. -- Erik Trimble Java System Support Mailstop: usca14-102 Phone: x17195 Santa Clara, CA Timezone: US/Pacific (GMT-0800)
