Senior Technical Support Engineer for Xythos Software, Inc.

Xythos sells a document management system (a J2EE system), and is looking for a Senior Technical Support Engineer (we've also called it a "Level 3 Support Engineer"). Our current support team (5 people) is very talented but we don't have any that are incredibly familiar with Unix systems, so those problems end up going to development and IT. So we're looking for an engineer that is very familiar with Unix systems (especially Linux and/or Solaris, but most Unix skills are portable) to be a sort of "man/woman on the mountain" to handle the more complicated issues and to teach the other engineers along the way. A good candidate doesn't cry when hearing the words "file system", "load balancer", "/etc/fstab", "webdav", "database", or "super Solaris admin thingie whatchamajigger" (yes, pronounced that way), and has some experience with a mainstream RDBMS. The position is in San Francisco, CA, USA, but we've interviewed one or two telecommuter candidates. I'm not the hiring manager (or involved in the hiring process at all except doing about 1/4 of the interviews), but I'm happy to tell you about the company and the product if you're curious. -- Xythos is seeking a seasoned Technical Support Engineer to accept the challenge of working in an energetic environment, with cutting-edge technologies, to help deliver world-class, enterprise document management solutions. Description This position plays a key role in Xythos? success by assisting customers' technical resources in deploying and maintaining our software. Responsibilities include assisting customers deploy and configure our products within their organization, answering technical questions related to the Xythos Enterprise Document Manager, Digital Locker and Xythos Drive technologies. Individual will provide second- level support and serve as second-level liaison between customers and Development/Quality Assurance Departments. This will include troubleshooting customers? environments and/or analyzing custom code and utilities which are developed using our WebFile Server APIs. The Senior Technical Support Engineer will also lead internal projects that benefit the organization. He will mentor junior members and will often be involved in highly critical customer situations. The Senior Technical Support Engineer will contribute to the development of future products and facilitate improvement of customer support processes. Requirements Skills and Knowledge: 4+ years of technical support experience with web-based applications. Experience supporting servlet based applications a must. Working knowledge of Java Working knowledge of UNIX/LINUX Working knowledge of WebDAV a plus. Advanced understanding of networking technologies a plus Hands on experience with relational databases Advanced troubleshooting skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills (Japanese speaking a plus) Ability to be a self-starter in a dynamic environment. Ability to be on-call 24X7 on a rotational basis Academic: The position requires a BS in Computer Science (or a related field), or equivalent industry experience.
