Hi everyone, I've recently completed my PhD in astrophysics at Caltech, and have elected to pursue employment outside of academia. I'm a FreeBSD committer (since 1998). My UNIX and networking skills are strong. I am versatile and solve my own problems. Research in astronomy involves dealing with all sorts of programming and data-handling challenges, and there's nobody you can run to for help. My academic experience has provided me with a rigorous approach to problem solving, and experience planning projects over the long term. My fianc?e and I are looking to relocate to the central coast of California, probably the SLO area, but we're flexible. I may also have time to work on short-term projects over the next couple of months. My r?sum?, in PDF and plain text formats, is attached. I thank you for your consideration; please to not hesitate to call or email if you have opportunities to discuss. Matthew Hunt -------------- next part -------------- NAME Matthew P. EDUCATION California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California Ph.D., Astrophysics, May 2004. Dissertation: "Faint optically selected AGN at z=3." Advisor: Charles C. Steidel The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania B.S., Physics and Astronomy & Astrophysics, June 1998. Minor in mathematics. Graduated with Honors and with Distinction. EXPERIENCE California Institute of Technology}, Pasadena, California Graduate Student, 1998-2004 Original and important research on the demographics of active galactic nuclei, requiring considerable data analysis and programming. Teaching Assistant, 1999-2001 Assisted faculty in teaching undergraduate and Ph.D.-level courses. Presented lectures, prepared and graded problem sets, assisted students, set up and supervised laboratory courses. The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania Sperling/Cohen Tutor in Mathematics, 1995-1998 Employed by the Department of Mathematics. Tutored small groups of undergraduates in first- and second-semester calculus, giving emphasis to problem-solving strategies. The FreeBSD Project, http://www.FreeBSD.org/ Committer, 1998-present Volunteer developer for the FreeBSD UNIX operating system, with authorization to directly change the operating system or bundled components. Primary emphasis on the Ports Collection, a mechanism for easily installing third-party applications on FreeBSD machines. Includes experience with CVS version control and the GNATS problem-tracking system in a 100+ developer environment. Various public school districts, Pennsylvania UNIX and Networking Consultant, 1996-1998 Consulted on a day-to-day basis for school districts near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, connecting to the Internet. Installed and configured Linux servers, configured and maintained DNS, SMTP and POP mail servers, and Apache web servers. TECHNICAL SKILLS General: UNIX programming and administration (FreeBSD, Linux, some Solaris), Windows, networking (protocols and hardware), security, SQL (mostly PostgreSQL), LaTeX, and HTML. Languages: Fluent in C, Perl, and UNIX shells. I have dabbled in countless languages from assembler to LISP to INTERCAL, and pick up new languages quickly and readily. I routinely manage even small projects with CVS for version control. Applications: Knowledgeable in Apache, BIND, sendmail, ssh, ntp, and most other common UNIX servers. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
