[Gluster-users] Seeking Feedback on Gluster Development Priorities/Roadmap
SEEKING FEEDBACK ON ROADMAP Gluster is looking for feedback on its roadmap and priorities for 2011. In Q1, we have placed a heavy emphasis on packaging Gluster as a virtual appliance, and have released a Gluster Virtual Storage Appliance for VMWare, a Gluster Amazon Machine Image, and a Gluster Rightscale template. Our next point release will include a set of management and monitoring tools. Following that, our internal priorities are: -Continuous Data Replication (over WAN) -Improved User Interface -CIFS/Active Directory Support -Object storage (unified file and object) -Geo-replication to Amazon S3 (unify public and private cloud) -Continuous Data Protection -REST management API's -Enhanced support for ISCSi SANs Are these the right priorities? How would you prioritize? (We will be scheduling an IRC conference later this month). -Ben Golub (Gluster CEO), Anand Babu (Gluster founder & CTO), and Hitesh Chellani (Gluster Founder & VP)

Performance and Disk Pools. Those are number ONE for me. How about the _basics_ of such a fs? Create an answer to the still unresolved question: What files are currently not in-sync?>From the very first day of glusterfs there is no answer to this fundamentalquestion for the user. No way to monitor the real state of a replicating fs up to the current day. -- Regards, Stephan

I think the number 1 feature that will propel Gluster to exponential growth is the first feature mentioned (Continuous replication over WAN). It will make it a ubiquitous filesystem, and will most probably get it distributed on most linux distributions within some time. [Gluster-users] Seeking Feedback on Gluster Development Priorities/Roadmap
hi ben, it's good to be consulted! my take on priorities would be: 0/ as per stephens email - basic syncing tools. right now, i'm unsure (see 1) how often to do a "find sync" to "heal" the fs. the baseline fs needs to be more robust. it feels very delicate and i often find myself needing to restart a client/glusterd. 1/ documentation. gluster looks great - but there's a lack of good solid docs. and lots of old legacy / conflicting documentation out there too. this is a barrier for new users (ie, me) to try it out. 2/ improved UI. by this, do you mean reporting/migration tools? if so, yes. 3/ gNFS NLM locking i'd concentrate on getting whats already there working better & faster than adding new features. looking forward to irc conference. regards, paul Following that, our internal priorities are:> > -Continuous Data Replication (over WAN) > -Improved User Interface > -CIFS/Active Directory Support > -Object storage (unified file and object) > -Geo-replication to Amazon S3 (unify public and private cloud) > -Continuous Data Protection > -REST management API's > -Enhanced support for ISCSi SANs > > Are these the right priorities? For me these are top critical items: 1) Stability 2) A way of deleting nodes without losing files (adequate space in remaining nodes permitting) 3) Performance 4) Documentation Bill Sebok Computer Software Manager, Univ. of Maryland, Astronomy Internet: wls at astro.umd.edu URL: http://furo.astro.umd.edu/
