zfs discuss - Aug 2006 - commercial backup software and zfs

Hi

Is the following an accurate sstatment of the current status with (for me) the 3
main commercial ackup software solutions out there

(1) Legato Networker - support coming in 7.3.2 patch due soon.  Until then
backups of ZFS filesystems wont work at all as the acl(8) calls will fail. But
will work if you use "legacy" mouning of zfs filesytsem (but even then
wont include any ALCs).  Or backup via NFS mounts.

(2) IBM''s TSM - no current or official support from IBM.  Will/wont
work?

(3) Veritas NetBackup - client v5.1+ works out of the box, but without full/any
ACL support.

Last I heard the patch was suppose to be released in September.

The only workaround is to mount the file system over nfs and then backup 
over nfs.  The legacy mount option doesn''t have anything to do with ACL
support.

Did a backup/restore on TSM, works fine.

It seems to me that if zfs send/receive where hooked in with ndmp
(http://ndmp.org), that zfs would very quickly have pretty broad
backup support.  This could provide a distributed, authenticated
transport for replicating file systems using ndmpcopy or some of the
snap* enhancements to ndmp offered up by Netapp.

But then again, I haven''t followed the world of NDMP lately, and the
efforts at turning the various NDMP Internet drafts into RFC''s seems
to be stalled.  A quick search of existing Open Source NDMP
implementations doesn''t turn up much.  Do others on the list have more
insight into whether this has been considered?

Here are some comments received recently regarding Legato and ZFS:

Restrictions associated with the ZFS file system (LGTpa88264)
The following are restrictions associated with the ZFS file system:
Only an Administrator with full access to ZFS directories may recover files. ZFS
files can be restored to a UFS file system. When restoring ZFS files to a UFS
file
system, only the permission information is retained, the access control entries
are not retained. ZFS snapshots and the files in ZFS directories are not backed
up or restored when restoring the original files. file systems must be
explicitly specified in the client''s save set attribute. ZFS file
systems will not be recognized if you use the ALL keyword.

Additionally, according to LGTpa83909, The ZFS filesystem is supported in
NetWorker 7.3.2 (the release date is currently unknown but expected to be
somewhere arround sept/oct).

Thank you for contacting Legato/EMC support. ZFS support is planned for NW 7.3.2
which is at the moment in beta testing ( See  extract from the 7.3.2 Release
Notes  below) Release is planned for end of September, but this has not been
finalised:

Sun ZFS Qualification
The NetWorker software supports ZFS/NFSv4 ACLs. The NetWorker software
supports a migration to a ZFS environment.
